A United States Patent numbered US4884792 was granted to Roy Rendahl
at Lake Center Industries in Winona, MN for his design of a locking self-adjusting,
variable-thickness, cam-operated clamp that also locks in the raised, open position.

When I created this clamp, as part of an industrial air conditioning fan production and
assembly machine that I was designing, Ed Steele, the head of my company's machine
building division (my boss's boss!) saw it and said: "You designed a $2,000 clamp when you
could have bought one for $200! But since it's already in production out in the shop I'll let it go."

Ed always had a knack for knowing just when something was in the final stage of
assembly out on the production floor. That day, he rounded up all the engineers and took
us out to the shop to see my newly assembled clamp (I didn't even know it was done yet!).
He said that he had never seen anything like it and that the company would try to patent it.
And we did.
